U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Issues Final Rule for Active Ingredients Used in Antibacterial Soaps

On September 2, 2016, the FDA issued a final rule pertaining to active ingredients used in antibacterial soap products marketed to consumers or made available for use in public settings. This rule applies to antibacterial soap products, not hand sanitizers or hand sanitizing wipes. It also does not apply to products used in the healthcare and food industries.

In this ruling, the FDA lists active ingredients that can no longer be used in consumer antibacterial soap products. This includes Triclosan, one of the most common antibacterial ingredients. Manufacturers have one year to comply with this rule by reformulating or removing these products from the market.

GOJO has already begun to phase out the use of Triclosan as an active ingredient in its antibacterial handwash products. Our phase out of Triclosan is part of our Sustainable Chemistry Policy implementation and a testament to our commitment to developing safe, high-performing and sustainable solutions in a responsible, innovative and proactive manner.

In its press release, the FDA reinforced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol when soap and water are not available.

GOJO offers a full portfolio of hand hygiene solutions that meets FDA requirements and includes both antibacterial and non-antibacterial soaps and PURELL® Advanced Hand Sanitizer. This allows facilities to choose the best hand hygiene option to meet their needs.

As an industry leader, GOJO is consistently pursuing scientific advancements to innovate and develop the best hand hygiene solutions possible and supports the FDA’s evidence-based approach. We will continue to work to advance the science of hand hygiene products.
