GOJO White Paper - "Alcohol-Based Hand Rubs: Antimicrobial Efficacy and Clinical Effectiveness"

Presented at the SHEA Conference, April 2011

Summary: The primary role of alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR) is to reduce the load of pathogenic transient microorganisms on the hands and thereby reduce infections. The degree to which ABHR achieve their purpose (i.e. clinical effectiveness) is influenced by a complex relationship between a number

of variables. Some of the most critical variables are those that may influence product efficacy, including alcohol level, product form (i.e. rinse, gel, or foam), product formulation, and the quantity of product used. In addition, human factor variables that influence product acceptance and use by healthcare workers (i.e., “hand hygiene compliance”) are highly important, and in some cases may be dominant. The GOJO scientific overview of alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR) has the specific objective of addressing the critical variables which may influence their antimicrobial efficacy and clinical effectiveness.
