Endorsed by: American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), The Joint Commission, American College of Gastroenterology (ASC), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA), Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), and Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association (FASA).

This guideline includes recommendations for cleaning and disinfecting or sterilizing GI endoscopes, pressure/leak testing, use of automated washer-disinfectors, testing disinfectants and sterilants for effectiveness, disposal of solutions, storage of scopes and staff education and training.1

This guideline provides guidance on cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of patient-care medical devices and cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces. Endoscopes, lararoscopes and arthroscopes, tonometers and dental instruments are specifically addressed. Performance characteristics of common disinfectants are included as well as sterilization methods and monitoring. A helpful chart on pages 104-5 summarizes sterilization and disinfection methods for critical, semi-critical and non-critical devices.
