Sustainable Ways of Working

Sustainable Ways of Working (SWOWSM) is about changing the way that we think and work at GOJO in order to integrate sustainability in all aspects of our business. Practicing SWOW creates value for GOJO and its stakeholders—employees, customers, suppliers, partners, communities, society and the ecosystem—now and for generations to come.

It’s about living and working in ways that enhance life today while taking into account the needs of future generations. It’s about creating products, programs and services that are beneficial to life, and producing them in ways that don’t cause harm to society or the environment. It’s also about building economic strength and prosperity for GOJO and all of our stakeholders.

Here are just a few examples of how SWOW has changed the way we work at GOJO:

Plastics to Playgrounds
GOJO SWOW - Plastics to Playgrounds

Since 2007, GOJO has diverted more than 50% of our solid waste from landfills. This includes the more than 176 tons of scrap plastic we’ve donated for conversion into more than 320 playgrounds. It’s an example of doing the right thing for the environment while simultaneously improving the lives of those around us in an even more direct way.

Building on Energy Conservation

Built in 2007, the GOJO Distribution Center is a state-of-the-art 376,000-square-foot facility with energy conservation considered in every detail of design. Efficiencies that conserve energy and reduce operating costs include the use of T8 fluorescent bulbs that use 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last 10 times longer, sensors that shut off lights when not in use, and high frequency tow motor battery chargers that automatically shut down when batteries are charged.

Recycling at GOJO

GOJO gives new life to recycled paper, cardboard, batteries, scrap metals, plastic and beverage containers. While our recycling efforts have been in place for many years, here are some of the results we have tracked since 2007:

  • 3,872 tons of corrugated cardboard recycled, saving nearly 66,000 trees and 93 million gallons of water
  • 253 tons of scrap metal recycled, saving 910 barrels of oil and enough metal to make more than 600 hybrid cars
  • 142 tons of office paper recycled, saving the equivalent of more than 2,400 trees, nearly a million gallons of water and 600,000 KWh of electricity
Fuel for Sustainability
GOJO SWOW - Fuel for Sustainability

Since 2009, GOJO has had over 883 tons of scrap soap converted into energy to fuel other businesses. The scope of this initiative expanded greatly in mid-2010, with up to 25% of GOJO waste being earmarked for this innovative recycling project.

GOJO SANITARY SEALED™ Refills Help Protect Public Health

When GOJO became aware of the bacterial contamination issues associated with open refillable bulk soap reservoir dispensers (the kind refilled from a pour-style container), we immediately went to work to explore the issue and find a solution. A study, initiated by GOJO and conducted at the University of Arizona, found that 25% of bulk soap dispensers contain potentially harmful bacteria.1 To address the unnecessary public health risks posed by contaminated bulk dispensers GOJO began an effort to educate and lead the industry away from bulk soap dispensers to systems using recyclable factory sealed refills.

Small Changes, Meaningful Savings

GOJO uses a high volume of film each year in the production of different products in its line. In its raw material form, film for these products is provided on tubular cores. Small film cores were causing excess waste. By simply moving to a larger, 6-inch film core, GOJO was able to reduce film waste by 8%, keeping the excess film out of landfills each year.
