GOJO Timeline

1940    
1946 GOJO founded in Akron, Ohio. Sold hand-mixed batches of hand cleaner to co-workers in rubber manufacturing plant.  
1948 Introduced first waterless hand cleaner to safely remove grease, tar and oil from skin. Portion-control dispenser
1950  
1950 Introduced first portion-control dispenser to solve customer-identified problem of product waste.
1954 Relocated to 5000 square foot facility on Balch Street, Akron.
1960    
1965 Introduced first hand cleaner with pumice to help clean hands faster.  
1970    
1972 Expanded to 72,000 square foot facility on Cuyahoga Street, Akron.  
     
1980    
1980 Expanded to 500,000 square foot facility on State Road, Cuyahoga Falls. Used a small portion of the facility initially, but quickly expanded to utilize the entire space.  
1983 Entered the commercial hand cleaning business. Introduced bag-in-box dispensing system and a full line of lotion soaps for commercial applications.  
1988 Introduced PURELL® Instant Hand Sanitizer as part of a handwashing/hand sanitizing regimen in the foodservice market, and as a method for killing germs on hands in the healthcare market in emergency situations – when sinks were unavailable.  
1989 Entered the healthcare market with a complete line of products for long term care facilities under the PROVON® Brand name. PROVON logo

Expanded into the European market. Founded GOJO Europe.

Entered the manufacturing market with products specifically formulated for industrial facilities, and the durable, high-volume GOJO® PRO™ 2000 and PRO™ 5000 dispensers.

 
1996

Introduced SIGNOL™ Handwash Counter a device installed inside GOJO dispensers to help foodservice managers measure handwash frequency in order to build compliance.

Entered the Japanese market. Founded GOJO Japan.

 
1997

Launched PURELL as a consumer product.

Introduced GOJO® HAND MEDIC® Professional Skin Conditioner to help maintain the condition of Automotive Technician’s skin.

1998 Entered the education market. Introduced the HEALTHY HANDS. HEALTHY KIDS®. Program, a comprehensive education curriculum focused on teaching children proper hand hygiene habits.  
1999 Entered Latin America market. Founded GOJO America Latina.  
2000    
2000 Relocated world headquarters to One GOJO Plaza in downtown Akron, Ohio  
2001 Introduced the GOJO NXT® Dispensing system, a line of commercial soap dispensers engineered to optimize wall space, providing greater capacity in a smaller dispenser cabinet.  
2002

Launched PURELL PORTAL™ Program, a program geared toward helping healthcare facilities reduce the occurrence of healthcare-acquired infections by making PURELL accessible at strategic locations throughout a facility.

Introduced FMX™, a line of foam soap dispensers for commercial applications

Introduced line of GOJO Professional Technician Gloves to protect the hands of automotive technicians.

Introduced iNXT®, a new generation of smart, touch-free dispensing systems.

 
2004

Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Products purchases PURELL® consumer business unit. GOJO becomes distributor of PURELL in professional markets.

Introduced PURELL® FST™ Military Bottle, PURELL® Sanitizing Hand Wipes and GOJO® E1 Foam Handwash.

Launched Food Processing and Health & Fitness market programs, as well as PURELL® OUT FRONT™ Program for Foodservice.
