Environmental Stewardship: Innovating Through Sustainable Ways of Working
Sustainable Ways of Working (SWOW)SM is a critical GOJO strategy for embedding social, economic and environmental sustainability into everything we do. It's about living and working in ways that enhance life today while taking into account the needs of future generations. It's about creating products, programs and services that are beneficial to life, and producing them in ways that don't cause harm to society or the environment. It's also about building economic strength and prosperity for GOJO and all of our stakeholders.
Through SWOW, we focus on ways large and small to advance environmental stewardship in our workplace. In 2010, GOJO declared ambitious long-range sustainability goals for reductions in water usage, solid waste and greenhouse gases. Here are a few examples of steps we've taken:

Small Changes, Meaningful Savings
GOJO uses a high volume of film each year in the production of different products in its line. In its raw material form, film for these products is provided on tubular cores. Small film cores were causing excess waste. By simply moving to a larger, six-inch film core, GOJO was able to reduce film waste by 8%, keeping the excess film out of landfills each year. |

The Write Move for the Planet
When we found that 1.6 billion pens are discarded in landfills in America every year, we wanted to address the issue. Our Writing Instrument Recycling Program, in partnership with Staples® and Newell Rubbermaid, sends our used pens and markers to join the TerraCycle™ Writing Instrument Brigade. |
TerraCycle recycles them into pellets that will be used to make such items as storage totes. Best of all, the Akron-Canton (Ohio) Regional Food Bank will receive cash donations from TerraCycle based on the number of writing instruments turned in by GOJO employees.
